110lbs for coxswains of womens boats. 120lbs for mens coxswains. Coxswains tend to be slight in size which helps to minimize the drag on the boat. And if it does get to be subjective we are all used to looking at rowers in a boat and saying this one rows better than that one. The lightweight squad tips the scales between 121 and 130 pounds with heights between 5 feet 5 inches and 5 feet 10 inches. Does anyone know of taller coxswains.
The varsity 8 coxswain my freshman year of high school was 61 and 140 pounds. I myself am around 5ft. Some mens college teams will even have a female coxswain to help keep the body weight on the boat down. They placed 3rd in the junior 8 at sraas 2nd place at the vasra state championship and did ok at youths. I know coaches usually like to have their coxswains small less dead weight to pull around etc. I know plenty of coxswains between 5ft.
Us rowing the governing body of rowing in the united states does require female coxswains to weigh at least 110 pounds for all rowing events. Usrowing regulations require that a coxswain in an event for mens crews shall weigh at least 120 lbs and a coxswain in an event for womens crews shall weigh at least 110 lbs. Then i was introduced to the concept of coxswain weigh ins for masters nationals. Before the regatta there is a meeting between the officials coxswains and coaches. If you weighed any less than that you had to carry extra weight each time you launched for a race. There is not even agreement on what the coxswains primary job is.
Coxswains are a different case altogether. Height doesnt quite matter at all as long as youre a reasonable weight.
